12/17/2023 0 Comments Butyl vs putty tape![]() ![]() ![]() Real butyl tape will stretch into infinity (exaggeration), or at least into an endless thin filament, which is the way to tell. Butyl tape is a sticky putty-like tape, sometimes called putty tape although my research has shown that they’re NOT the same thing, which matters because the real deal works where the other one will dry out and crumble. We’ve decided to try butyl tape* with our rebidding projects this time around, impressed with what we’ve heard about in terms of a lasting seal. This weekend was finally the perfect combination of no rain and warm enough, plus no “all hands below” projects going on. (Don’t worry - we caulked and screwed the lid in place, so no water made it into the boat.) It’s been bugging me every afternoon we step onto the boat, especially since the top has been fixed with blue tape a couple of times in the last 3 weeks. Repairing it meant removing it and sending it off, so we’ve had a hole in the boat covered by a green plastic lid to a Rubbermaid container for quite some time. Over time, we got lax about keeping it covered and the dome got crazed. This bronze-bezeled, bulkhead-mounted piece of navigation equipment is one of the first pieces we bought for Calypso back in 1992, and I remember how excited we were to install it in the cockpit. Oh, nice trailer by the way and welcome to the board. We reinstalled the compass this weekend. There are several product types of Tacky Tape depending on the intended application, and many different sizes depending on the type of tape. Tacky Tape is a brand name of a line of various butyl tapes used in construction and industrial applications. ![]() Putty tape pretty much keeps it's form after installation and exposure to heat while butyl tape can continue to squeeze out over time. That being said, it is more difficult to work with, it's workability being less forgiving, and can be messy, taking more time to clean up. Unlike putty tape, any butyl that is not directly exposed to the elements will stay soft and tacky pretty much indefinitely. ![]() Because of its tackiness, technically it does provide a better seal. It is much tackier than putty tape and doesn't like to let go of whatever it has attached itself to. Putty tape should be replaced every 10 years give or take as it does dry up over time.īutyl tape manufactured for the RV industry is available in pretty much the same sizes as putty tape. It is forgiving, easy to work with and easy to clean up. Putty tape is preferred by most here for windows and j-rail. It works perfectly well as long as care is taken to install it properly. It typically comes in 1/8" and 3/16" thickness by 3/4" and 1" widths. Putty tape is the type that was originally used on yours and my trailer. I appreciate all you have put out there for me to learn from. I figure it can only help all those out there trying to do their restorations right. So would you please list what to use where and maybe some why if you feel like it. As it is hard to tell if there is any difference between any of these. I have heard it discussed in many ways but it all ends up clear as mud. I have heard the white stuff is better than monkey poop.I have heard about tacky tape. I have heard/read that pure butyl is better than putty tape. Which Butyl tape / Putty tape and what is the difference? So here is the question you have all heard but I am still too dense to understand the answer to. Fortunately she was is pretty darn good shape to start but some snow load on the roof eventually let a little water in and I am addressing those issues while the skin is off. She is a 56' Highway Cruiser and I have started to deal with her needs as of a couple weeks ago.You know the normal inspection for rot and replacing the roof metal as it was slopped full of tar & goop. Been lurking and learning here for quite sometime and am getting to the point where I have a question and though I know it has been answered a million times over I cannot say it has ever been clear.īut before that I just thought I would say hello as this is my intro as well. What better way than to share a photo of our little trailer as that is what you are really interested in anyway. ![]()
